Our Youth

We are very proud of our Saturday Greek School, and Dance Group. A large number of our youth attends the events of these organizations.

Our Greek School

Our Greek School is held every Saturday during the regular school year. We hold two classes from 9:00 to 11:30 and one class from 12:30 to 3:00. The morning sessions are one for the junior beginners' level children and the other for the older intermediate level children. The afternoon session is for the advanced level students.

During the school year 2006-2007 twenty-eight students were registered and attended our Greek School. During the school year 2007-2008 thirty students are registered and attend our Greek School.

Preliminary and final written and oral exams are taken by all current students, so that our teacher Mrs. Olga Xenodochidou will be able to place the students to the appropriate level. The placement will be based equally on the students' performance in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

OLGA XENODOCHIDOU: Greek School Teacher and Dance Instructor

Olga Xenodochidou was born in Esslingen, Germany to Greek parents, Penelope and Vasilios Xenodochidis. The family returned to Greece when she was seven years old and they still live there in the beautiful city of Thessaloniki. Being a member of a traditional Greek dances group, as well as a member of one of the most prominent Choirs of Thessaloniki during her high school years, Olga performed both as a folk dancer and choir singer in many cultural events in different places.

In 1995, she graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Philosophy with a Bachelor of Arts in Italian Language and Literature.  As an undergraduate student and until 2000, she worked as a licensed foreign language instructor in many private institutions. She also served as a translator and interpreter for private purposes in several business annual events.

In summer of 2000, she decided to pursue Graduate Studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo, USA. She was admitted to the Departments of Romance Languages and Literatures of School of Arts and Sciences and Learning and Instruction of School of Education. During her graduate years she was a member of the Traditional Hellenic Dancing Group of the University at Buffalo. She performed as a folk dancer with the Group at several cultural events in Buffalo. In the spring of 2002, she graduated 'With High Distinction' from University at Buffalo, with a Masters of Arts in Humanities. She also worked as a Lecturer at the same University, at Buffalo State College and at the Niagara Community College for a year. In 2003 she went back to Greece, where she worked as a Lecturer at North College of Thessaloniki and as a foreign language instructor in a private institute.

The summer of 2004 was a busy time for Olga.  In July, she married her husband Aristides Docoslis, who had been appointed as Assistant Professor at Chemical Engineering Department at Queen's University two years ago. So, in August, she moved to Canada and since that time Kingston has been her home.

Some of the projects that have been coordinated by Olga Xenodochidou include:

   1) Greek School: Teaching two classes (2.5 hours each) every Saturday.

   2) Greek Folk Dances: Teaching one-hour class of traditional Greek dances every Saturday.

   3) Webpage Design: Presenting our Community's Greek School and Dance Group to the world.
